U18 Girls State Champions

U18 Girls State Champions

The Under 18 Girls state championships finished with a bang for the Sydney South Hockey Association. The Under 18.1 Stingrays team finished as Division 2 State Champions. They played 6 games over the weekend for 5 wins and 1 draw. They scored 15 goals over the weekend and only conceded 4. On the way to victory they defeated Canberra, Bathurst and Nepean. They drew with Manning Valley. In the semi finals they defeated New England 2 – 1. The final was against Northern Sydney and Beaches who had gone through the tournament winning all their games with an impressive 17 goals for and 2 against. They had a strong semi-final win over Manning Valley and the stage was set.

Northern Sydney & Beaches came out hard and within 2 minutes our Stingray girls were 1 goal down. That woke them up and they began to press. Claudia equalised, with a brilliant shot from a very tight angle, before half time. The girls from the North came out strongly in the second half but their attacks were repelled with strong Stingray defence. Clare then slotted home an amazing goal high into the net to put the Stingrays into the lead. With 10 minutes to go, Clare scored her second and the Stingrays were up 3-1.

Legs were tiring and the NSB girls were becoming desperate, an incisive run into the circle lead to a penalty corner and a goal. Five minutes to go and the Stingrays were up 3-2. The clock ticked down and the excitement built, the game was being played at a frantic pace and even the spectators were exhausted. The final hooter sounded with the Stingrays up 3 – 2. They are State Champions.

The core of this team has been together since they played Division 3 in Newcastle in 2015. They won that division for promotion to Division 2. They kept working hard and it has paid off with promotion to Division 1.  A fantastic effort from a talented group of girls.  Rebecca, Claudia and Naomi were rewarded for their strong performances over the weekend by again being included in the HNSW Accelerated Athlete Program.  Congratulations girls.

The Under 18.2 Stingrays team were in Division 3. This was a young developing team and they also had a strong tournament. The team included 4 players who had never played representative hockey before as well as 4 players who are still in the Under 15 age group. They finished a very credible third in their pool with a win over Dubbo, a draw with Illawarra South Coast, a close loss to Port Macquarie Hastings and a loss to eventual Division 3 winners, Far North Coast. In their classification game they had a nerve wracking fighting draw with North West Sydney. At one stage they faced 10 penalty corners in a row, followed by a penalty stroke, beautifully saved by Isabel. The result meant that their state ranking improved two places from last year. A fantastic effort from such a young and developing team. Every player in this team is eligible to play in the Under 18 age group again next year.
